Character’s name
Colonel Lázaro Aponte
Role in plot
Lázaro Aponte is the head of police. He is informed of the twins’ plan to kill Santiago by one of his officers Leandro Pornoy. Colonel Aponte is the one who takes away the first set of knives from the twins but fails to prevent Santiago’s death because he checks in on his game of dominoes. After Santiago’s death, he is authorised by the governor of the province to take the preliminary steps (funeral etc). His role is to further criticize society, as he is an authority figurehead who does not even carry out his duties.
Significance of name in work
Lázaro comes from Lazarus. In the Bible, there is a parable named “Lázarus and the rich man” in which Lázarus is depicted as a beggar who dies and is “carried to Abraham’s bosom” The figurative meaning of being in one’s bosom is to be in a position of closeness, to be highly regarded. This is greatly ironic because in Chronicle of a Death Foretold, Colonel Lázaro Aponte is pitied and the narrator himself writes “His behaviour that Monday was the final proof of his silliness” (58)
